CHEMICAL COMPOSITION AND
STRUCTURE
Ultramarine blue is an inorganic mineral pigment
Pigment Blue 29, C.I. 77007.
CEE No0: 32.07.75.0
CAS No0: 57455.37.5
EINECS code: 3.099.283.
Chemically it is a Sodium alumino Sulfosilicate.
The chemical formula can be expressed as:
Na6.88 (Al5.65 Si6.35) O 24
S 4.24
GENERAL PROPERTIES
SPECIFIC GRAVITY
The specific gravity of all Ultramarine Blues is 2.35gr/cm3.
The tap density varies between 0.5 Kg/I and 0.8 Kg/I.
OIL ABSORPTION
The indicates the amount of linseed oil needed to make a fluid paste
with pigment. The amount of oil absorption should be between 36
and 40 gm of oil/100 gm of blue pigment.
TINTING STRENGTH
Tinting Strength is the capacity to tint an opaque material is the
tinting strength. It is the relative concept.
PARTICLE SIZE
It plays an important role in the determination of the tinting strength
of ultramarine blue pigment. Smaller the particle size higher the
tinting strength and bigger the particle size lower the tinting
strength.
SPECIFIC SURFACE
It is correlated with the particle size, the bigger the particle
size lower the specific surface area and smaller the particle size
larger the specific surface area.
OPACITY
Ultramarine Blues are transparent in oleoresins and plastics.
DISPERSIBILITY
Ultramarine blue disperses easily in water, oil, resins and plastics.
SOLUBILITY
Ultramarine Blue is insoluble in all aliphatic and aromatic solvents
and does not migrate in paints, inks, or plastics.
CONDUCTIVITY.
Ultramarine Blue is a non- conductor of heat and electricity.
MOISTURE CONTENT
The hygroscopic power of ultramarine blue pigment is weak.
LIGHT RESISTANCE.
Ultramarine Blues have excellent light resistance, rated at
8 on the Wool Scale.
WEATHERABILITY.
Ultramarines have very good weatherability.
ALKALI RESISTANCE.
Ultramarine Blues have good alkali resistance.
ACID RESISTANCE.
Ultramarine Blues has poor aicd resistance.
TEMPRETURE RESISTANCE.
Ultramarine blue retains its colour even at 3500C.
TOXICITY.
Ultramarine blues are non-toxic.
COMPATIBILITY.
Ultramarine blue can be mixed with any pigment Organic
or Inorganic.
